UN Reports Over 700 Deaths in Five Days as Violence Escalates in DR Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is witnessing one of its deadliest escalations in recent months, with over 700 people killed and 2,800 injured in just five days, according to a report released by the United Nations.

The surge in violence, primarily affecting North Kivu and Ituri provinces, has left thousands displaced as clashes between government forces and armed militias continue to intensify. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has expressed deep concern over the rapidly worsening humanitarian crisis.

“This level of bloodshed in such a short period is alarming. Civilians, once again, are paying the highest price,” a UN spokesperson stated.

The latest wave of unrest is being fueled by ongoing territorial disputes, ethnic tensions, and competition over the region’s rich natural resources. Among the groups involved in the fighting is the M23 rebel faction, along with other militias vying for control. Reports from the ground indicate widespread human rights violations, mass killings, and forced displacements.

Humanitarian organizations have issued urgent appeals for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian access to affected areas. Meanwhile, regional leaders and international diplomats are calling for intensified efforts to broker peace and prevent further loss of life.
