UN Security Council to Meet Today on Syria Crisis

The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to hold an emergency closed-door meeting today to discuss the ongoing situation in Syria, according to diplomatic sources.

French news agency AFP reports that the meeting, called at Russia’s request, will address the political and military developments in Syria following the departure of President Bashar al-Assad from the country. The meeting, which was set for 3 PM on Sunday, will focus on the aftermath of Syrian rebels’ takeover of the capital and the subsequent collapse of Assad’s 24-year rule.

On Sunday, Syrian rebels issued a statement announcing the fall of Assad’s government and the liberation of the people, claiming victory over a regime that had imprisoned many. The statement also celebrated the release of prisoners and the end of the injustices perpetuated under the regime, specifically mentioning the notorious Sednaya prison.
