UN Warns Middle East at a Crossroads: Two-State Solution May Be the Last Opportunity

The Middle East is undergoing rapid transformation, and the window for achieving a two-state solution is narrowing, warns Sigrid Kaag, the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process.

Speaking at a UN Security Council session titled “The Situation in the Middle East,” Kaag emphasized that while the full impact of these changes remains uncertain, they present a historic opportunity for peace, security, and stability in the region.

Kaag cautioned that this could be the last chance to implement a two-state solution, urging world leaders to act decisively to prevent prolonged instability. She stressed that the international community must prioritize diplomatic efforts to ensure a sustainable and just resolution to the long-standing conflict.

Highlighting the dire humanitarian situation, Kaag revealed that Gaza requires $53 billion for reconstruction. She noted that Arab nations are taking the lead in drafting a comprehensive rebuilding plan, with Egypt preparing to host an international conference focused on Gaza’s restoration.

Kaag reaffirmed the United Nations’ dedication to supporting reconstruction efforts, emphasizing that forced displacement of Palestinians is not an option. She insisted that rebuilding Gaza is crucial for ensuring the people’s right to live with dignity and maintain normalcy in their daily lives.
