U.S. Administration Denies Reports of Renaming Gulf of Mexico and Denali
The U.S. administration has strongly denied reports claiming that the Gulf of Mexico has been officially renamed the Gulf of America and that North America’s highest peak has once again been named Mount McKinley.
Following reports from some global media outlets, the U.S. administration clarified that Donald Trump never officially changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America,” nor did his administration rename Denali back to Mount McKinley. While Trump expressed support for restoring the Mount McKinley name, no official action was taken during his presidency.
The U.S. Board on Geographic Names and international regulations prevent such unilateral changes to geographical names and international identities.
The U.S. administration also dismissed claims that Claudia Sheinbaum referred to “Mexican America,” calling it fabricated. She became Mexico’s first female president in 2024, long after Trump had left office.
