US foreign policy, Ambassador Mike Huckabee has declared that the United States is no longer committed to establishing an independent Palestinian state, drawing sharp criticism from analysts and Palestinian advocates.
Speaking in an interview with Bloomberg News, Huckabee—appointed by President Donald Trump—said, “I don’t think so,” when asked whether a Palestinian state remains a US goal. He suggested instead that any Palestinian entity could be created in “a Muslim country,” signaling that Israel would not be expected to cede territory.
“There’s no room for it,” Huckabee stated, referring to Palestinian sovereignty, adding that cultural changes necessary to make a Palestinian state possible likely won’t occur “in our lifetime.”
When questioned about Palestinians living under Israeli occupation in the West Bank, Huckabee employed language favored by Israel’s right wing, asking, “Does it have to be in Judea and Samaria?”—using biblical terms for the West Bank.
His comments follow a pattern of previous statements rejecting the concept of Israeli occupation. In a 2017 visit to the region, Huckabee said, “There’s no such thing as a West Bank,” calling Israeli settlements “communities” rather than settlements.
Middle East experts said the remarks simply confirm what has already become evident in practice. Khaled Elgindy of Georgetown University described the Trump administration’s policy as one of “Palestinian erasure,” both politically and physically. He noted that even during Trump’s first term, proposed plans stripped a future Palestinian state of sovereignty.
