Brasília — The United States has sharply criticized a ruling by Brazil’s Supreme Court placing former President Jair Bolsonaro under house arrest, describing the move as a political maneuver aimed at suppressing opposition voices ahead of a high-stakes trial.

The order was issued by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who accused Bolsonaro of violating a ban on social media activity, a restriction that was imposed last month along with an electronic ankle monitor.
