Washington — The US National Counter terrorism Center (NCTC) has issued a fresh warning about potential al-Qaeda attacks on American soil, citing the group’s latest propaganda efforts and calls for violence against the United States.
According to a memo circulated to law enforcement agencies, al-Qaeda and its Yemen-based affiliate, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), are attempting to exploit global conflicts — especially those involving US military support or presence — to inspire new attacks.
The NCTC advisory urged US government officials and security personnel to adopt stricter precautionary measures, including:
- Avoiding public disclosure of travel plans, schedules, and locations.
- Refraining from wearing badges or displaying official identification outside of work.
- Strengthening security presence at large public gatherings, including sports and music events.
It also recommended pre-event security briefings to mitigate risks of potential terror plots targeting crowded venues.
The NCTC, which was established in 2004 under the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in the wake of the September 11 attacks, said the intelligence shared with local and federal law enforcement is designed to provide early warning systems and response tools.
“Al-Qaeda’s continued efforts to inspire violence highlight its enduring threat to US security,” the memo stated.
The warning comes at a time when the US faces mounting challenges from multiple extremist networks. Experts caution that the propaganda spread by al-Qaeda and AQAP could inspire so-called lone-wolf attacks or small-scale plots, making early detection and prevention critical.
