GUAM — The United States has begun relocating B-2 stealth bombers to the Pacific island of Guam, two U.S. officials confirmed on Saturday, as President Donald Trump considers whether to join Israel in military strikes against Iran.
According to sources speaking on condition of anonymity to Reuters, the deployment of the nuclear-capable bombers is underway, although it remains unclear if the move is directly linked to escalating Middle East tensions. The U.S. Department of Defense has yet to issue an official statement.
The B-2 Spirit is capable of carrying the 30,000-pound GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP), a bunker-busting bomb designed to destroy hardened underground targets such as Iran’s Fordow nuclear facility.
While the officials confirmed the movement of the aircraft, they emphasized that no formal orders have been issued to deploy the bombers beyond Guam. The number of aircraft being transferred was not disclosed.
This development comes as Trump’s national security team weighs options amid mounting pressure following Israel’s large-scale military operations against Iran. The possibility of U.S. involvement in strikes on Iranian nuclear infrastructure has sparked global concern over the risk of a wider regional war.
Although no direct connection has been confirmed, defense analysts suggest the deployment could serve both as a strategic deterrent and as preparation for contingency operations, should diplomatic efforts fail.
The movement of long-range bombers to Guam, a key U.S. military hub in the Indo-Pacific, signals Washington’s readiness to project force across multiple theaters of conflict simultaneously.
