JERUSALEM — The United States has temporarily closed its embassy in Jerusalem as the armed conflict between Iran and Israel intensifies, raising regional security concerns and speculation about potential U.S. involvement.
According to an official statement released on Tuesday, the U.S. Embassy will remain closed from Wednesday, June 18, through Friday, June 20, following security directives issued by the Israeli Home Front Command.
“Given the security situation and in compliance with Israel Home Front Command guidance, the US Embassy in Jerusalem will be closed tomorrow (Wednesday, June 18) through Friday (June 20),” the statement confirmed.
U.S. authorities also instructed all government personnel and their family members in Jerusalem and nearby areas to shelter in place at their residences until further notice. The precautionary measure underscores the severity of the situation amid the fifth consecutive day of hostilities between Iran and Israel.
The embassy’s closure reflects rising fears over the potential escalation of the conflict and its broader implications for U.S. diplomatic and military interests in the region.
The decision follows a series of Iranian missile and drone attacks on Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, as part of retaliatory strikes after Israeli air raids inside Iran. The Israeli military has responded with its own countermeasures, escalating fears of a broader regional war.
While the U.S. has reiterated its support for Israel’s right to self-defense, officials in Washington are calling for calm and diplomatic resolution to prevent further escalation.
The embassy will assess the security situation before resuming normal operations. In the meantime, U.S. citizens in Israel have been advised to remain vigilant, follow local authorities’ guidance, and avoid conflict zones.
