New Delhi – US defense technology firm Shield AI has pitched its cutting-edge Hivemind autonomy software to the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) as part of efforts to introduce the V-BAT unmanned aerial system (UAS) to the Indian Army and Air Force.
As part of the evaluation, Shield AI conducted a three-day demonstration in the mountainous terrain of Himachal Pradesh, flying its Nova 2 quadcopter powered by Hivemind. The system successfully performed autonomous operations in GPS- and communication-denied environments, highlighting its ability to function in contested battlefields where traditional navigation is compromised.
The event also featured hands-on training for Indian Special Forces, allowing personnel to experience the drone’s capabilities firsthand.
“Autonomy will be a decisive factor in the future of defence, and India has made it clear that it intends to lead,” said Sarjan Shah, Managing Director for India at Shield AI. He emphasized that Hivemind is a mission-ready solution capable of performing in the most demanding operational environments.
According to Shield AI, these demonstrations mark a critical step in India’s journey toward next-generation defense adoption, strengthening both national security and indigenous innovation.
Hivemind is Shield AI’s flagship artificial intelligence system, developed to perform a wide range of autonomous missions, including:
- Air defense penetration
- Reconnaissance
- Counter-air operations
- Beyond-visual-range strike
- Maritime domain awareness
The software enables drones to operate without human input or satellite communications, making them highly effective in GPS-jammed or communication-restricted zones. Its modular design allows integration across multiple platforms, giving defense partners the flexibility to rapidly develop, test, and field autonomy solutions.
India is reportedly considering an initial $35 million deal for the V-BAT drone. To support the program, Shield AI has partnered with JSW Defence, a subsidiary of the JSW Group, to locally produce the vertical take-off and landing system.
The JSW Group has committed \$90 million over two years, including \$65 million in the first year. The funds will be used to establish a domestic manufacturing facility, train Indian defense personnel, and develop a local supply chain.
In addition to production, the facility will also provide operator training, maintenance, and repair services, ensuring long-term operational support within India.
