WASHINGTON — A top U.S. lawmaker has confirmed that American intelligence agencies have found no evidence that Iran is actively developing nuclear weapons, despite escalating tensions and recent claims made by former President Donald Trump.
Senator Mark Warner, Vice Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Wednesday that U.S. intelligence officials briefed senators earlier this week following Israel’s airstrikes on Iran. He stated that the briefing reaffirmed the long-standing assessment that Iran is not currently pursuing a nuclear weapons program.
Warner’s remarks directly counter claims made by former President Donald Trump, who recently stated that Iran was “very close” to building a nuclear bomb at the time Israel launched its latest military offensive.
“That is not what we were told by intelligence officials,” Warner said, emphasizing the need for accurate information amid mounting regional conflict.
According to Warner, the U.S. intelligence community’s position remains unchanged despite rising hostilities in the Middle East. The agencies maintain that Iran continues to enrich uranium but has not made the decision to weaponize its nuclear program.
This conclusion aligns with previous reports from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which have consistently noted Iran’s compliance with safeguards, even amid growing tensions with Western nations.
Warner also urged restraint and emphasized the importance of diplomatic engagement to de-escalate the situation between Iran and Israel, warning that misinformation could dangerously fuel conflict.
