US Senators Propose New Sanctions to Pressure Russia on Ukraine Peace Talks
A bipartisan coalition of U.S. senators has introduced a new bill aimed at imposing stricter sanctions on Russia if it obstructs efforts to negotiate peace in Ukraine. This legislative push follows President Donald Trump’s recent consideration of additional economic measures against Moscow.
The proposed sanctions would impose tariffs on nations purchasing Russian oil, gas, uranium, and other key exports, further tightening economic restrictions on the Kremlin. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, who spearheaded the bill, emphasized the need for firm action.
“These sanctions are designed to hit hard because Russia must be held accountable for its aggression,” the senators stated. “The prevailing view in the Senate is clear: Russia initiated this brutal war, and it must end now to prevent future aggression.”
With an even split of 25 Republican and 25 Democratic co-sponsors, the bill highlights the strong bipartisan commitment to supporting Ukraine.
Moscow recently agreed to a temporary halt on strikes against Ukrainian energy infrastructure in March but has resisted committing to a broader ceasefire, a key demand from Washington. Meanwhile, Trump’s stance on Ukraine has caused friction within his own party, particularly after he suggested in February that Kyiv bore some responsibility for the ongoing conflict.
