US Vetoes UN Resolution for Gaza Ceasefire, Citing Risk of Empowering Hamas

UNITED NATIONS —The United States on Wednesday vetoed a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, becoming the sole member of the 15-nation body to vote against the measure. Washington argued the resolution would empower Hamas and obstruct active diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.

The draft resolution, supported by the majority of council members, called for an immediate, unconditional ceasefire by all parties, the release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups, and unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza.

US Deputy Ambassador to the UN Dorothy Shea defended the veto, arguing the resolution lacked necessary conditions to ensure sustainable peace and failed to hold Hamas accountable.“It also creates a false equivalence between Israel and Hamas, a designated terrorist organization.”

Palestinian authorities report at least 16 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes on Wednesday, including 12 civilians sheltering in tents. A day earlier, 27 were reportedly killed near a Gaza Humanitarian Fund (GHF) aid site when Israeli forces opened fire. The Israeli military said it is investigating the incident.

Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour urged the Security Council to act, warning that global inaction will be judged harshly. “History will not forgive our silence or indifference toward the suffering of the Palestinian people,” Mansour said.

Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon condemned the resolution, accusing it of ignoring the ongoing threat posed by Hamas and undermining efforts already in place. “This text does not promote relief. It threatens it by advancing political agendas and ignoring the security risks,” Danon said.
