The United States has used its veto power to block a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza. The draft, which was supported by 14 out of the 15 Security Council members, was blocked by the U.S. for the fifth time since the conflict between Israel and Hamas escalated in October 2024.
The resolution, proposed by ten non-permanent Security Council members, called for a permanent ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and unhindered access for humanitarian aid to Gaza. It also demanded all parties involved adhere to international law. A clause in the resolution stipulated that if approved, the UN Secretary-General would submit a report on the progress of the ceasefire within three weeks.
While the resolution had strong support, including from major global powers, the U.S. vetoed it, reaffirming its stance of supporting Israel’s right to defend itself. This move has drawn criticism from those pushing for an immediate halt to the violence and more humanitarian support for Gaza, further intensifying the ongoing debate over the international response to the Middle East crisis.
