US Approves $7.4 Billion Arms Sale to Israel, Including Bombs and Missiles
The United States has approved a $7.4 billion arms sale to Israel, including bombs, guidance kits, fuses, and Hellfire missiles, amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
The State Department authorized the sale of $6.75 billion in bombs and related equipment, alongside $660 million in Hellfire missiles, according to the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).
Strengthening Israel’s Defense Capabilities
The DSCA stated that the sale aims to bolster Israel’s ability to counter current and future threats, enhance homeland security, and serve as a deterrent against regional adversaries. The Hellfire missiles, widely used in precision strikes, will further support the Israeli Air Force in defending borders, infrastructure, and civilian areas.
Context: US Support Amid Gaza Conflict
Israel launched a major offensive in Gaza in October 2023 following a deadly attack by Hamas. The conflict led to widespread destruction and mass displacement within Gaza. A ceasefire agreement, reached last month, has temporarily paused hostilities and facilitated the release of hostages.
Under the previous Biden administration, a shipment of 2,000-pound bombs was halted due to concerns over civilian casualties. However, President Donald Trump reportedly reversed this decision upon returning to office, allowing the shipment to proceed.
Congressional Approval Expected
While the State Department has approved the sale, the deal must still pass through Congress. Given Israel’s status as Washington’s closest Middle Eastern ally, significant opposition to the transaction is unlikely.
