Ambassador of Uzbekistan, Alisher Tukhtaev, has expressed his commitment to raising bilateral trade between Uzbekistan and Pakistan to $1 billion in the coming years, in line with an agreement at the leadership level between both countries. This marks a significant goal, as trade between the nations grew from $122 million in 2019 to $387 million in 2023.
Speaking at a meeting with the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Tukhtaev emphasized the ongoing growth in trade and the ambition to strengthen economic ties.
The ambassador also highlighted the recent launch of direct flights between Tashkent and Lahore, with plans for direct flights from Karachi to Uzbekistan this year. He further noted the introduction of a soft visa regime, making it easier for Pakistani citizens to visit Uzbekistan for business and tourism, fostering closer connections.
With a focus on regional connectivity, Tukhtaev praised the historical and cultural relations between the two countries and stressed the importance of mutual economic cooperation. He invited Pakistani businesses to explore investment opportunities in sectors such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, leather, food processing, and agriculture in Uzbekistan, which he described as a safe and conducive environment for investment.
In his remarks, KCCI President Muhammad Jawed Bilwani underscored the long-standing ties between the nations and the potential for trade diversification. He suggested collaboration in cotton research and development, agro-food trade, and joint ventures in sectors such as transportation, logistics, IT, and construction. Bilwani also encouraged Uzbek investors to explore opportunities in food processing, livestock, and high-yield farming.
