Vance Accuses Denmark of Failing to Protect Greenland, Calls for Stronger U.S. Partnership
U.S. Vice President JD Vance has raised concerns over Denmark’s ability to safeguard Greenland, stating that the United States could offer stronger security and economic stability for the Arctic territory. Speaking at Pituffik Space Base, Vance claimed that Russia and China have shown increased interest in the region, necessitating greater U.S. involvement.
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen dismissed Vance’s remarks, calling them unfair and inaccurate. Greenland’s newly elected Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also criticized the visit, labeling it a “lack of respect” for the island’s governance.
Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump reinforced his long-standing stance on Greenland’s importance, stating that “the U.S. cannot rely on Denmark to secure the Arctic.”
Protests erupted in Nuuk, with locals displaying banners reading “Our Land. Our Future.” Polls indicate overwhelming opposition among Greenlanders to any form of U.S. control.
As geopolitical tensions rise in the Arctic, experts suggest that diplomatic and economic pressure may be used to advance U.S. strategic interests in Greenland.
