CARDIFF — The Welsh Government has formally approved a new policy allowing councils to introduce a tourist tax starting in 2027, in a landmark move designed to strengthen local services and revive the Welsh language.

Visitors over 18 staying in hotels, B&Bs, or short-term rentals may pay around £1.30 (€1.50) per night. For campsites and hostels, the proposed levy will be approximately £0.75 (€0.90) per night.

The plan is not a blanket, nation-wide fee: individual local authorities will choose whether or not to implement the charge in their area.

Who Is Exempt from the Welsh Tourist Tax?

Exemptions have also been built into the policy. The levy will not apply to:

* People lodging with family or friends
* Stays in an individual’s sole or main residence
* Long-term stays exceeding 31 consecutive days

This means that while visitors staying in hotels and short-term rentals may see costs rise slightly, locals will not face added charges when hosting friends or family.

While tourist taxes are common globally, Wales’ approach is designed to deliver direct local benefits.

Unlike some destinations where tourist taxes simply boost municipal budgets, Wales has earmarked the funds for specific goals.

The revenue will be used to enhance visitor facilities such as toilets, footpaths, beaches, and visitor centres—investments that benefit both tourists and local communities.

Crucially, the Welsh Government has pledged to use part of the income to support its ambitious target of achieving one million Welsh speakers by 2050.

Recent government figures show that only 27.8% of the population aged three and above spoke Welsh as of June 2024—the lowest rate in eight years.

France introduced its first tourist tax in 1910. Today, over 60 destinations worldwide—including Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Venice (which launched its own entry fee in April 2025)—have similar charges.

Such levies often fund marketing campaigns, festivals, and infrastructure projects that enhance both visitor experience and local quality of life.
