WhatsApp Accuses Russia of Blocking Encrypted Messaging Services

Report by “Safarti Tarjuman” International News Desk

Moscow — WhatsApp, the widely used messaging app owned by Meta Platforms, has accused Russian authorities of attempting to block its service in a move the company says undermines citizens’ right to secure and private communication.

In an official statement, WhatsApp stressed that its end-to-end encryption safeguards user privacy and prevents unauthorized surveillance — a feature it claims is the key reason Russian regulators are targeting the platform. The app is used by over 100 million people in Russia.

Over the past several weeks, Russian authorities have restricted certain WhatsApp and Telegram calls, alleging that these foreign-owned services refuse to comply with data-sharing requests in fraud and terrorism investigations.

Analysts say the dispute highlights the growing clash between digital privacy advocates and governments seeking increased control over online communications.
