World Bank Country Director Najy Benhassine has announced a significant aid package of $2 billion aimed at the recovery and rehabilitation of flood victims in Pakistan. During a recent briefing, he specified that $1.55 billion is allocated for new projects targeting those affected by the floods.
Benhassine noted that $450 million is earmarked for existing projects, primarily focused on assisting flood victims in Sindh. He revealed that $500 million will be utilized for the reconstruction of homes in Sindh, with $220 million already allocated for the same purpose. To date, 2.1 million homes are being funded, and approximately 935,000 bank accounts have been opened for flood victims in the province.
He explained that the disbursement of funds for home reconstruction will occur in four installments. Currently, the construction of homes for 640,000 flood victims has commenced in Sindh, and the aid is being distributed with a high level of transparency.
In contrast, Benhassine mentioned that only 104 bank accounts have been opened for flood victims in Baluchistan, where no funds have yet been allocated for home construction. He further clarified that while the amount for building homes in Baluchistan is set at 400,000 rupees, in Sindh, it is 300,000 rupees.
