Yulia Navalnaya, widow of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, has launched a new satellite TV channel aimed at bypassing Russian state censorship and continuing her husband’s fight for freedom of expression.
The channel, named Future of Russia, will be broadcast via a free-to-air satellite platform operated by Reporters Without Borders (RSF). The initiative is designed to expand the reach of Navalny’s exiled media team, delivering uncensored news and political commentary directly into Russian homes.
The satellite broadcast officially begins on June 4, which would have marked Alexei Navalny’s 49th birthday. The anti-corruption crusader and outspoken Putin critic died under suspicious circumstances at a high-security Arctic penal colony on February 16, 2024. His family and allies maintain he was murdered by Russian authorities.
With most prominent Kremlin critics now in prison or exile, Navalny’s influence within Russia has dwindled. The new channel is seen as a critical tool to keep his mission alive.
Speaking in Paris, Yulia Navalnaya emphasized the urgency of bypassing digital restrictions and reaching Russian audiences who rely on satellite television.
“We are doing our best to stay connected through YouTube, but the Kremlin keeps trying to block us,” she said. “There is almost full censorship in Russia. Under a dictatorship, it’s very difficult to spread information.”
The new satellite channel will broadcast content already produced for YouTube, with the goal of preserving Navalny’s mission and amplifying voices of dissent in Russia.
